100131 Whose Son Is This: A Call to Young Adults and Youth
Tim Franklin
1 Samuel 17:55
Introduction:
-
I want to challenge our youth and young adults today. If you have been around FCC for long or any church as far as it matters…you have heard the story of David and Goliath. I want to revisit that story today and share it with you from a different angle.
-
My heart was ‘wowed’ this week by God. And I am stirred today. I am stirred that God would use youth like Timothy, Jeremiah, Josiah, Daniel, and the three Hebrew children to ignite a nation and to advance the church.
-
What is a youth as defined by God’s word?
-
The Hebrew word na`ar means a reference to a youngster of ages between weaning and (especially) marriageable young manhood is primary (from Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament. Copyright © 1980 by The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. All rights reserved. Used by permission.)
-
The NT definition means basically the same. The word youth, thus covers any age from birth to young adult. As in the case of David, Jeremiah, etc., it means one who is seen immature because of lack of life experiences.
-
I am glad the scriptures are not full of just old men doing great things for God but also of youth who break the barrier of immaturity by depth of relationship in Him.
-
Fools do make a name for themselves in youth.
-
But youth who follow hard after God make a name and difference in this sinful world.
-
I am calling you upward today. I am calling you to look up, grow up, and reach up for that for which Christ Jesus has reached out to you. You are not an accident. You are not a mistake. God knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb. He has a plan for your life and it does not include hell. It does not include a season of pain on the broad road to destruction. It is a date with destiny in which you will one day look back and says, “Thank you Jesus for laying hold of my life!”
-
2 Timothy 1:8-9 It was Paul who said, “God has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time beganNKJV
-
Philippians 3:14 Paul lived his life in that place as well as Daniel, Jeremiah and others. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. NKJV
-
I am also glad that God gives encouragement to youth who are faced with their own insecurities like Jeremiah 1:7 Do not say, ‘I am but a youth’ for you shall go to all to whom I send you and whatever I command you, you shall speak. NKJV
-
Wow! To have God as your friend, boss, leader.
-
Wow! To go on behalf of God. To speak for God. That is incredible!
-
a Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. THE MESSAGE.
-
The Anointed Youth 16:13
-
Anointing is not determined by who you know, where you live or what you do. Status with man means nothing to God if you do not have status with Him.
-
Most of today’s youth live with the desire to gain man’s status approval. ( ie. preppy, goth, redneck, jock, etc.)
-
You want to have the right label so you fit in, in general, and you want to have the right label, right look, right attitude. It means nothing to God.
-
God did not send Samuel to Jesse because he had the prominent status in Bethlehem.
-
God did not choose David because he wore Versace and Armani shepherd’s robes and Vans on his feet.
-
God did not choose David because David hung with Goths or Jocks or any other group of his day.
-
God chose David because of his heart! Your heart is what matters most to God. And your heart is what will matter most when you one day stand before him.
-
So pursue your status with God! If you achieve that you will have status with men. Ie. Joseph, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Timothy.
-
Anointing is determined by your pursuit of God.
-
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. NKJV
-
Filled- to be at the place of satisfaction. Not lacking.
-
Those who hunger and thirst are releasing their faith to reach him no matter the cost.
-
God did not want the apostles to be lacking and He hid them away for 40 day in pursuit of him and POW! Acts 2 they are all filled.
-
Ephesians 3:14-19 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, … that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. NKJV
-
Paul did not want the early church lacking so he prays that they would be filled.
-
This pursuit is both a discipline and a grace.
-
You have to have discipline to keep on going when you are tired, when you don’t feel him, when He is silent. Sight of the destination will keep you moving toward the desired end!
-
Samuel Anoints David
-
There is one anointing! That is the anointing that comes by the Holy Spirit.
-
You can be anointed to be a soldier. You can be anointed to be a teacher. You can be anointed to be a politician. You can be anointed to be a mother. All of these life calls are there to bring the Kingdom of God into the earth under your place of jurisdiction.
-
The anointing is given to accomplish the calling on your life—God’s plan.
-
God had a plan for David! David need the anointing of the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s plan.
-
Make David King—most people stop here.
-
Crush Israel’s enemies—most people expect this from the king.
-
Implement the House of Prayer model of worship and prayer.—This is what God was after!
-
Don’t ever think that just being a lawyer is all that God is after.
-
Expect God to use you mightily beyond your understanding.
-
Samuel Anoints David
-
The anointing is the distinguishing mark of God.
-
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward!
-
The anointing is given in the presence of his brothers.
-
They do not understand the impact of the anointing. Many people will not understand you when you get anointed. In fact they will persecute you.
-
When the anointing begins to rise up they begin to push him down. 17:28. God puts people in our lives to adjust us so we open even more to the anointing. We welcome that. But there are those who will seek to discourage us in the anointing.
-
The anointing will make you stand out! 16:18 The Holy Spirit leaves Saul when David is anointed king. Saul’s servants seek a man to help him with this troubling spirit.
-
David is found: skillful on the harp, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech,; and the Lord is with him.
-
The Aggressive Youth
-
The Covenant speaks
-
1 Samuel 17:26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" NKJV
-
David sees reward: riches, King’s daughter, no taxes from now on for the family.
-
You could say, “David was selfish wanting all that.” Does that mean that the rest of the army including Saul was not selfish?
-
No, this was a prize and David was thinking—this should be easy. I have killed lions and bears while saving sheep. I can take this giant! Israel was saying, “He is so big we can’t take him!” David was saying, “He is so big I can’t miss!”
-
David sees the bigger picture. He sees the heart of God, the strength of God, the anointing of God all flowing out of covenant with God. When he references the ‘uncircumcised Philistine’, David is alluding to the fact—how can I lose!
-
To David—all things are possible to those who believe. Mk 9:23; 10:27.
-
David Moves
-
The anointing empowers you to move! (Fear did not hold him back. The righteous are as bold as a lion.)
-
David was not thinking about the influence of older brothers
-
David was not considering what his peers thought
-
David was not thinking of the entire scared army of Israel.
-
David was thinking about that giant, not knowing he was stepping into his calling!
-
The anointing empowers you to move in God’s ways, not mans. (Saul’s Armor)
-
David tried on the armor of Saul. But Saul's ways were cumbersome, awkward, and untried! Vs. 39
-
EM Bounds said, “God is not looking for better methods, God is looking for better men.”
-
David knew: The Holy Spirit was not anointing armor. The Holy Spirit was anointing David.
-
The anointing empowers you to move beyond the teasing, taunting, intimidating voices of men.
-
David’s brothers—go home, sit with the sheep, you are just proud and arrogant. 17:28
-
David’s King—17:37 Saul the King, Saul the man, Saul the soldier—his melting heart, fearful looks, and somber blessing “God be with you, David.” Oh that was encouraging.
-
David’s enemy--1 Samuel 17:43-44 So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" NKJV
-
David Declares
-
1 Samuel 17:45-47 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands." NKJV
-
David Prophesies! The young lad, the young shepherd boy, the immature son of Jesse had the word of the Lord! Whose word do you have? David declares:
-
Your methods are no match for Gods. I do not come in my own strength I come in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel’s armies. David acknowledges the anointing and where his strength comes from. You must acknowledge that yourself. Do not wait until the time of crisis, for crisis will come young people and it will come on your watch.
-
You are finished today!
-
All Israel will know:
-
There is a God and you are not him!
-
There is a God and I am not him!
-
There is a God, and this battle –now, here today! Is HIS!! Everyone will know it.
-
David Strikes
-
David Ran to the giant. 17:48 The anointing gives one courage when he starts to move.
-
One smooth stone—in the hand of an anointed vessel, guided by the anointing of God brought down a mountain of impossibility!
-
David did not stop there! He took Goliaths sword and cut his head off!
-
The Affective Youth
-
The word affective means that it affects or excites emotion; suited to affect. Websters 1828 Dictionary.
-
David affected an entire enemy army. One boy, one youth—caused fear to fall on an entire enemy army and they fled. They fled knowing that they would be food for buzzards and wild beasts.
-
David affected Israel’s entire army. All of Israel rose with joy in pursuit. David became the talk of the day.
-
There is coming a time when God will anoint some of you take a stand. And when He does He is going to come through so big and so powerful, it will turn a school, a coffee shop, a law firm. Do not under estimate God!
-
There is coming a time when the church will be so filled with fear and with sin that it will take a champion of God, a young person to shatter the image of hell on a people so that they can remember again who they are.
-
David affected a king (Gave leaders courage). Saul was amazed. Young people give God first place and this body and community will ask, “Whose son is this?”
-
Vs 55 Whose son is this youth?
-
Vs. 58 Whose son are you young man?
-
David’s act of courage, out a covenant heart with God, gave a king strength to go and generals the courage to fight.
-
You will be called upon by God one day to do exactly that. Your strength and zeal are meant to inspire the people of God not frustrate them.
-
I admit to you, that the older people get the more lax they get in their ways; the more conditioned they get to their environment the more they accept it; and the more feeble they begin to feel the less helpful they see themselves. But when a young person breaks through for the Lord it gives hope to all, courage to all and strength to all.
-
David affected a man and brought forth a life-friend
-
1 Samuel 18:1 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. NKJV
-
The anointing did that! God creates friendships, epic friendships, in the spirit that are born out of adversity and overcoming. This friendship was a work of God.
-
God let Jonathan see the heart of David. A simple shepherd boy who was skilled on the harp and with song. He asked nothing in return in helping his father Saul. This boy, stood fearless in the face of a terrifying enemy and did not waver. God showed Jonathan David’s heart and God melted them together.
-
Do not under estimate the power of friendships formed by the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion:
-
God is looking for heroes among you today.
-
Who will answer that call? Who is willing to say yes today to God. This is not a salvation invitation. It is an invitation to commit your life to him so that the anointing may increase upon you in your area of influence and your call in this life.
-
Last invitation to those being called into the Kingdom of God. Make room for those who may have come forward to the prior invitation. Ie. “You may have just said yes to the first invitation out of desire for God. That is great, but if you came forward for that and you have never made Jesus Lord of your life. Come now and let me pray with you.
